Resumo:Xiamen, a city in the south eastern coast of China, is experiencing an accelerated urbanization. Unfortunately, recent urban improvements are displacing the traditional population and eradicating the historic urban fabric. In a context of rapid economic growth, it is important to ask if this new Chinese city addresses site specific issues Economic trends. Through an analysis of the current urbanization in Xiamen, this work proposes new alternatives of urban development; taking into account, the country’s challenges in the fields of innovation, a knowledge based economy and social-cohesion. Through the writings of contemporary academics and the analysis of the Xiamen case, some key points were proposed that should be taken into account by urban designers addressing this new socio-economic agenda.
