A product of urban transformation, efforts have been made to plan the valley as a territorial unit. To achieve this supra-municipal institutions have been set up, namely: Associated Municipalities of the Valley of Aburra –MASA– in 1966 and the Metrpolitan Area of the Valley of Aburrá –AMVA– in 1980. A movement towards the recognition of the ‘metropolitan’, as a political fact, is evident in this historical process. This research is supported by historical documents from the archives of such institutions and interviews with professionals who were involved in the planning of the city of Medellin as well as AMVA. Se presenta el reconocimiento y análisis de hechos y políticas que han derivado en realidades de carácter metropolitano en el Valle de Aburrá en los periodos 1950-1980 y 1980-2007. Producto de su transformación urbana, este valle ha realizado esfuerzos por planificarse como una unidad territorial y para ello, configuró instituciones de carácter supramunicipal, verbigracia: Municipios Asociados del Valle de Aburrá –MASA– en 1966 y el Área Metropolitana del Valle de Aburrá –AMVA– en 1980. En este recorrido histórico se evidencian avances hacia el reconocimiento de lo metropolitano como un hecho político. Esta indagación se apoyó en documentos históricos de los archivos de las instituciones referidas y en entrevistas a profesionales que estuvieron vinculados a tareas de planeación de la ciudad de Medellín y de la misma AMVA.
