| Summary: | The article seeks to understand how sociopolitical strategies, which do not directly intervene in the physical space, imply a reordering of the built environment along with transformations of local social practices. The socio-spatial transformation processes triggered by the Pacification Police Unit (UPP) implementation in the Vidigal favela, in Rio de Janeiro city, are analyzed as a case study. The resident’s point of view is adopted to understand how these processes reinforce (or not) dynamics of social exclusion and spatial segmentation to which the favelas have historically been subjected, identifying its consequences. Methodologically, this qualitative research comprises: 1) recognition of the Vidigal before the UPP implementation: built space - buildings, streets and open spaces -, and lived space - daily practices and values, and current social relationships; 2) Understanding the UPP program; and 3) recognition of post-UPP socio-spatial transformation processes. It can be seen that socio-spatial transformations reinforce the favela social exclusion and spatial segregation by its incorporation into the city’s market dynamics (soil and services). In addition, the program has faced a decay in the subsequent years, worsening of the verified panorama. |
