description The article explores the residential expectations of the inhabitants of Temuco, one of the most important intermediate cities in Chile. The symbolic devices linked to the idea of housing are analyzed, thereby determining the discursive differences between upper, middle and lower classes. Considering the changes in the forms of production of current capitalism, the creation of new social classes and the early introduction of the idea of own housing in Chile, the assumption raised by Bourdieu regarding the degree of correspondence between the capitals of a person and the projection of a particular spatial taste on the city, is relativized. Recognizing five different sectors of Temuco in socio-spatial terms, and using the Grounded Theory as a methodological strategy to analyze 30 interviews conducted, the results indicate that the principle of property over housing operates as the central foundation of residential expectation, independent of class social of the person.

El artículo explora las expectativas residenciales de los habitantes de Temuco, una de las ciudades intermedias más importantes de Chile. Se analizan los dispositivos simbólicos vinculados a la idea de vivienda, determinando con ello las diferencias discursivas entre clases altas, medias y bajas. Considerando las transformaciones en las formas de producción del capitalismo actual, la creación de nuevas clases sociales y la temprana introducción de la idea de vivienda propia en Chile, se relativiza el supuesto planteado por Bourdieu respecto al grado de correspondencia entre los capitales de una persona y la proyección de un gusto espacial determinado sobre la ciudad. Se reconocen cinco sectores diferentes de Temuco en términos socioespaciales y se utiliza la Teoría Fundamentada como estrategia metodológica para analizar 30 entrevistas realizadas; así, los resultados indican que el principio de propiedad sobre la vivienda opera como el fundamento central de la expectativa residencial, independiente de la clase social de la persona. L'article explore les attentes résidentielles  des habitants de Temuco, l'une des villes intermédiaires les plus importantes du Chili. Les dispositifs symboliques liés à l'idée de logement sont analysés, déterminant ainsi les différences discursives entre les classes supérieures, moyennes et inférieures. Considérant les transformations des formes de production du capitalisme actuel, la création de nouvelles classes sociales et l'introduction précoce de l'idée d’être propriétaire de son logement au Chili, l'hypothèse avancée par Bourdieu devient très relative quant au degré de correspondance entre le capital d'une personne et la projection d'un goût spatial déterminé sur la ville. Reconnaissant cinq secteurs différents de Temuco en termes socio-spatiaux et utilisant Grounded Theory comme stratégie méthodologique pour analyser 30 entretiens recueillis, les résultats indiquent que le principe de l'accession à la propriété fonctionne comme le fondement central du attente résidentielle, indépendamment de la classe. social de la personne.
