This paper presents a laboratory and field investigation that has been conducted by researchers of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and University of São Paulo (USP), with ultra low flush toilets (6.0 litres per flush). The field investigation was developed in 24 low-income houses in Pindamonhangaba, a town in the State of São Paulo. The overall and toilet water consumption was monitored using a telemeter system. A questionnaire was also developed to survey users’ opinion concerning the water closets performance. A comparison between results of the water consumption metering and the questionnaire is shown. A comparative analysis of the results obtained both during field research and laboratory investigation is also made. Finally, proposals for the standardization of low flush toilet performance evaluation are presented. O consumo de água nas bacias sanitárias representa uma grande porcentagem do total de água consumida em uma residência e, portanto, possui um grande potencial de economia de água. Este trabalho apresenta uma investigação de laboratório e de campo desenvolvida por pesquisadores da Universidade Estadual de Campinas e da Universidade de São Paulo para a avaliação do desempenho de bacias sanitárias de volume de descarga reduzido (6 litros por acionamento). A investigação de laboratório consistiu na realização de ensaios para a avaliação da capacidade de remoção e transporte de sólidos. A investigação de campo foi desenvolvida em 24 residências de baixa renda localizadas em Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo, e contemplou o monitoramento do consumo de água total das residências e das bacias sanitárias com um sistema de telemedição, além da aplicação de um questionário aos usuários. É apresentada uma comparação entre os resultados do monitoramento do consumo de água com os obtidos com a aplicação do questionário, além da avaliação comparativa entre os resultados obtidos em campo e em laboratório. Por último, são efetuadas propostas para a normalização nacional para a avaliação do desempenho de bacias sanitárias de volume de descarga reduzido.
