要約:This paper discusses a theoretical framework concerned with the dynamic and multidimensional meaning of dwellings, reinforcing the importance of studying and applying the concepts of spatial flexibility and adaptability in housing, especially in social housing. Different definitions and interpretations of the meaning of dwelling are presented, followed by comments on the changes that usually happen in social housing, including aspects related to user satisfaction. Then a focus is given to flexibility, by discussing design alternatives and principles that enable housing spaces to become more versatile and dynamic. These design guidelines were based on a literature review and also on the systematic observation of 3,000 apartment floor plans from residential building projects carried out in 50 different Brazilian towns, including most of the State capitals, between 1995 and 2000.
