This process was developed in the rural settlement “Fazenda Pirituba” (Itapeva, State of São Paulo) as part of the research project entitled “Social housing in reforestation wood as an economical alternative for multiple uses of the forest”. The focus of this study was the dialogue between dwellers and architects about building systems that use preferably renewable materials, taking into consideration cultural, social and politic aspects, besides the economic the environmental ones. In this process, besides technical, environmental and economical issues, questions and conflicts related to the ideological and cultural dimensions emerged. The study concluded that such ideological and cultural dimensions must be incorporated in architectural design methods for housing in which there is participation of future dwellers. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo principal discutir a aplicação da pesquisa-ação à elaboração de projeto arquitetônico e discussão da produção da habitação, que envolveu a participação de moradores e de arquitetos pesquisadores. A experiência analisada foi desenvolvida no Assentamento Rural Fazenda Pirituba (Itapeva-SP), dentro do Projeto “Habitação Social em Madeira de Reflorestamento como Alternativa Econômica para Usos Múltiplos da Floresta”. Procura-se enfatizar, sobretudo, o diálogo entre moradores e arquitetos sobre sistemas construtivos utilizando materiais preferencialmente renováveis, conciliando-se a dimensão participativa e a questão técnica e ambiental. O trabalho insere-se, portanto, no debate sobre construções sustentáveis que leva em consideração os aspectos sócio-políticos e culturais, além dos econômicos e ambientais. Nesse processo, observou-se que, além das dimensões técnicas, ambientais e econômicas, emergiram questões e conflitos relacionados às dimensões ideológica e cultural. Concluiu-se que essas últimas dimensões também precisam ser incorporadas nos métodos de elaboração de projetos arquitetônicos de habitação que contem com a participação dos futuros moradores.
