An exploratory methodology was applied in four different types of kitchens layouts - U, L, parallel and horizontal - based on the arrangement of the stove, refrigerator and sink/counter. All of them were from apartments in João Pessoa, Paraíba. In order to evaluate this work environment, an ergonomic approach and a study of the layout, based on the principles of layout, were adopted. This research work concludes by proposing layouts for the types of kitchens that were investigated as well as making some ergonomic suggestions to the design of kitchens. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o desempenho ergonômico de cozinhas residenciais através de análise comparativa de arranjos físicos. Foi aplicada uma metodologia de caráter exploratório em quatro cozinhas, todas em apartamentos da cidade de João Pessoa, Paraíba. Estas cozinhas foram classificadas em diferentes tipos de layout - horizontal, em U, em L e paralelo - com base na disposição do fogão, geladeira e bancada/pia. Para avaliar este ambiente de trabalho, foi adotada uma abordagem ergonômica e um estudo do arranjo físico, através da aplicação de ferramentas de análise do projeto de arranjo físico com base nos princípios de layout. Conclui-se o trabalho com propostas de layouts para as cozinhas estudadas e com algumas sugestões ergonômicas para o projeto de cozinhas.
