Some concepts are clarified, based on the requirements from fire codes and standards, in order to enable designers to discuss, argue and contribute for the improvement of the fire safety measures, as well as to apply them in an adequate and integrated way to building design. Este artigo apresenta o desenvolvimento e os resultados de uma pesquisa que teve como objetivo estabelecer diretrizes de projeto de segurança contra incêndio em edificações, envolvendo tanto aspectos conceituais como práticos. São esclarecidos conceitos, baseado nas exigências das regulamentações e normas, para que os projetistas possam discutir, argumentar e contribuir para o aprimoramento das medidas de segurança contra incêndio, podendo aplicá-las de forma adequada e integrada ao projeto arquitetônico.
