In spite of advances in both research and technological devices in the last decades, there are several barriers that make it difficult the effective application of such advances in architectural design. Recent studies have pointed out the lack of adequate understanding of the day-lighting phenomenon as one of the major barriers. This article presents the development of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), an innovative teaching method for improving students’ understanding about the lighting phenomenon, approaching the light path and its modifications generated by the main architectural design variables. As considerações a respeito da iluminação natural influenciam todo o processo de projeto e devem incorporar tanto quesitos conceituais e estéticos quanto técnicos. Apesar do avanço em pesquisas e aparatos tecnológicos surgidos nas últimas décadas, nota-se que existem barreiras que dificultam a aplicação desse avanço no projeto arquitetônico de modo satisfatório. Estudos recentes têm apontado como uma das principais barreiras a falta de adequada compreensão do fenômeno da luz. Objetiva-se com este trabalho desenvolver um Ambiente Virtual de Aprendizagem (AVA), um método de ensino inovador, visando a promover a compreensão do aluno sobre o fenômeno da iluminação no que se refere à propagação da luz e às modificações desta geradas pelas principais variáveis arquitetônicas.
