Assentamento rural.  Participatory action research aims to integrate researchers and members of an organization in a cooperative and participatory way to solve a social problem. This article analyzes the process of participatory action research in the construction of a sustainable domestic sewage treatment system, involving families from the Sepé-Tiaraju Rural Settlement, Serra Azul - SP. The main sources of evidence were direct  observation, written and visual documentation, and interviews with participants. Descriptions of the process of choosing domestic sewage treatment system, and of the construction of a pilot treatment system are presented, as well as an evaluation of the participatory action-research process. Results indicated the need to increase the control of this process, regarding the governance of financial resources and interpersonal conflicts. A pesquisa-ação participativa procura integrar autores da pesquisa e atores da ação de forma cooperativa e participativa, para a solução de um problema social. O objetivo deste artigo foi analisar a pesquisa-ação participativa implementada no processo de execução de sistema de tratamento de efluentes sanitários residenciais mais sustentáveis, com a participação das famílias do Assentamento Rural Sepé-Tiaraju, em Serra Azul, SP. A estratégia geral da pesquisa foi a pesquisa-ação participativa e a pesquisa de caso único: o Assentamento Rural Sepé-Tiaraju, Serra Azul, SP. Para coleta e análise dos dados, utilizaram-se como fontes de evidências a observação direta da atividade, registros escritos e visuais, e depoimentos de participantes. Os produtos obtidos foram: a) caracterização do processo participativo de escolha de sistema de tratamento de efluentes sanitários residenciais; b) caracterização do processo participativo de execução do sistema piloto de tratamento de efluentes sanitários residenciais; e c) avaliação da pesquisa-ação participativa. Os resultados indicaram a necessidade de aumentar o controle das variáveis: governabilidade de recursos financeiros e conflitos interpessoais.
