Riassunto:This paper aims at presenting a systematic review of the literature produced in recent years concerning the following aspects of the cycling mode: physical and political interventions, differences between what was planned and executed, methods and techniques used for strategic planning and evaluation, and their adequacy to particular contexts. The literature review covered both national and international studies published between 2000 and 2016. At the end of a thorough selection process, we concluded that most of the technical knowledge produced had been directed to understanding the role played by infrastructure in promoting bicycle use as an urban transport mode, mainly due to essential safety conditions to attract new users. Many studies focus on bicycle users’ perception regarding the interventions adopted, considering their potential attractiveness, or approaching possible planning strategies to reach an ideal network, mainly regarding safety. Although less explored, a vision of political and technical thinking begins to be drawn by researchers, addressing the difficulties of matching technical and scientific knowledge with political desires
