In that context, the different knowledges about the city were fragmentadinto specialized areas. Simultaneously, the city was considered as an object of study and action, platform for the attempt unsuccessful to construct urbanism as a profession. This paper examines the appearance of hygienists, engineers and architects in Buenos Aires, emphasizing the role that hygienism had in theconstitution of the technical urbanistic discourse about matters such as: a) the conception of the city as an organism, b) the association between space and society, e) the new figure of the specialist. Entre mediados del siglo XIX y las primeras décadas del siglo XX, en un proceso complejo y poco lineal, se fueron constituyendo los campos de ciertas profesiones de la ciudad que se instalaban en la administración estatal. En ese marco, los saberes sobre la ciudad se fueron fragmentando en dominios especializados. Simultáneamente, la ciudad se iba construyendo como un objeto de estudio y acción, base sobre la cual se intentó construir, sin conseguirlo, el urbanismo como disciplina. Este trabajo examina la emergencia de higienistas, ingenieros y arquitectos en Buenos Aires, poniendo el énfasis en el rol que le cupo al higienismo en la elaboración del discurso técnico urbanístico en torno a cuestiones como a) la visión de la ciudad como organismo, b) la asociación entre espacio y sociedad, e) la nueva figura del especialista.
