Summary: | Utility pretends to be an argument that distinguishes between a work of architecture and a work of art, and between this work of art and a mere craftsman’s work. The aesthetic quality, the plastic condition and, after all, beauty, has been another argument for distancing a work of architecture from a mere construction or engineering work. But, if that aesthetic quality, or its artistic condition, is reviewed according to the Kantian notion of “useless utility”, the argument seems to lose its stability. This text, therefore, is not about utility as function but as a general sense of any work. |
