| Izvleček: | In 1939, architect Luís Saia led off the first complete building restorations in Brazil: rammed earth construction from the 17th and early 18th century in the São Paulo State region. His work had influences from “reconstructive restoration” and his positions had traits in common with the formulations of Gustavo Giovannoni, Roberto Pane and Cesare Brandi. Saia stood out in what is now the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (created in 1937) for his theoretical and methodological strictness, global and critical approach and dedication to his historical studies. This article focuses on Saia’s accurate studies and interventions in the restoration of old architecture, as well as on the subsequent unsound criticism directed at his work. |
