Summary:The Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro was built in Santo Antônio Esplanade in the second half of the 20th century. The new Cathedral breaks the typology of the colonial churches and brings the influence of Maya pyramids in a modern building. Santo Antonio Esplanade traduces the breaking suffered by the urban tissue in this area of the city. It is still significant the contrast between past and present there, leaving open the defy of integrate them in a cultural and historical heritage set which retrieves the humanistic values which have always characterized Rio de Janeiro.
