The new Cathedral breaks the typology of the colonial churches and brings the influence of Maya pyramids in a modern building. Santo Antonio Esplanade traduces the breaking suffered by the urban tissue in this area of the city. It is still significant the contrast between past and present there, leaving open the defy of integrate them in a cultural and historical heritage set which retrieves the humanistic values which have always characterized Rio de Janeiro. La Catedral Metropolitana fue construida en la segunda mitad del siglo XX, en la Explanada de San Antonio. La nueva Catedral rompe con la tipología de las iglesias coloniales y asume, la influencia de las pirámides mayas. La Explanada de San Antonio expresa la gran ruptura que sufrió el tejido urbano en esta área. Todavía resulta significativo el contraste entre el pasado y el presente, que deja en abierto el desafío de integrarlos en un conjunto patrimonial que recupere los valores humanísicos que siempre caracterizaron la capital. A Catedral do Rio de Janeiro foi construída na Esplanada de Santo Antônio na segunda metade do século XX. A nova Catedral rompe com a tipologia das igrejas coloniais e traz a influência das pirâmides maias em um edifício moderno. A Esplanada de Santo Antônio traduz a grande ruptura que o tecido urbano sofreu nessa área onde é significativo o contraste entre o passado e o presente deixando em aberto o desafio de integrá-los em um conjunto patrimonial que recupere os valores humanísticos que sempre caracterizaram a cidade do Rio de Janeiro.
