| Izvleček: | The built heritage makes tangible the overlapping of past, present and future history, permeated by different sociocultural constructions. The preservation of heritage properties taking a territorial approach, in particular towards houses, implies increasing complexity and consequently, a constant challenge to find creative long-term sustainable solutions. In this sense, the safeguarding of the modest medium-sized cities constitutes an important and new approach. This article presents the research undertaken on the preservation of chalets built in the “Mar del Plata” style of the Argentinean city of the same name, through material and
social variables examined in one of its oldest and most characteristic neighborhoods. The chalets are a modest type of heritage asset mainly developed between 1930 and 1950. A preservation toolkit, appropriate for a specific territory and society, is presented. It is based on the analysis of three key steps, based, in turn, on qualitative methodologies utilizing bibliographical, photographical, archival, and oral sources, as well as plans and “in situ” surveys. Using this method, it will be possible to catalyze local approaches and achieve benefits in other intermediate cities. |
