Educação The theme of sustainable architecture is essentially multidisciplinary. Within this field of proposals, actions and responsibilities, this issue is discussed according to an architect’s perspective, highlighting the role of comfort and energy efficiency. The article starts with a brief historical context concerned with sustainable architecture, followed by considerations about starting points for the development of an architectural design that aims to contribute to sustainability, including the following topics: architectural design and environmental quality, climatization, design and energy, buildings’ certification, the international context, buildings and the built environment. Then, the article presents experiences on research, professional education and practice, focusing on the architectural design and its links with technology and environment. This content is the result of reflections upon the theme of Sustainable Architecture, based on ten years of the authors’ experience, including: (a) studies and research at the undergraduate and graduate levels, both theoretical and practical; (b), teaching experiences at both levels, with repercussion in design competitions within the country and abroad; and (c) professional practice together with Brazilian architects, while taking part in the development of innovative proposals. O tema da arquitetura sustentável é essencialmente multidisciplinar. Dentro desse universo de proposições, ações e responsabilidades, a discussão é apresentada sob a ótica do arquiteto, ressaltando o papel do conforto ambiental e da eficiência energética. O artigo começa com um breve contexto histórico no qual está inserido o tema da arquitetura sustentável, seguido por considerações sobre pontos de partida para o desenvolvimento do projeto arquitetônico em prol da sustentabilidade, abordando os seguintes tópicos: Projeto Arquitetônico e Qualidade Ambiental, Climatização, Projeto e Energia, Certificação de Edifícios, O Contexto Internacional, Edifícios e Ambiente Construído. Na seqüência, artigo apresenta experiências de pesquisa, ensino e prática com foco no projeto arquitetônico e suas relações com tecnologia e ambiente. Este conteúdo é fruto de uma reflexão sobre arquitetura sustentável, que tem como base dez anos de experiência das autoras, incluindo: (a) estudos e pesquisas na graduação e na pós-graduação, teóricos e práticos; (b) experiências de ensino em ambos os níveis, com repercussões em concursos nacionais e internacionais; e (c) atuação profissional junto a arquitetos do cenário nacional, desenvolvendo propostas inovadoras.
