Gaia:Throughout the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century, in an irregular and complex process, the arenas of certain professions of the city were defined, based in the Government's Administration. In that context, the different knowledges about the city were fragmentadinto specialized areas. Simultaneously, the city was considered as an object of study and action, platform for the attempt unsuccessful to construct urbanism as a profession. This paper examines the appearance of hygienists, engineers and architects in Buenos Aires, emphasizing the role that hygienism had in theconstitution of the technical urbanistic discourse about matters such as: a) the conception of the city as an organism, b) the association between space and society, e) the new figure of the specialist.
